On September 25, Cognition crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue.

Twenty-four months earlier, it was at $1 million.

In March 2024 its launch video went viral, and within weeks developers were taking it apart online. The company had no customers and no revenue. Since then:

  • it raised three rounds in twelve months, the last one at $48 billion

  • it bought Windsurf, a company five times its size, in 72 hours

  • its own agent now writes about 90% of its code

What they do? Cognition builds Devin, an AI software engineer.

Most AI coding tools sit inside the editor and suggest the next lines while a developer types. Devin works on its own: you assign it a ticket in Slack or Jira, it opens its own machine, writes the code, tests it and comes back with a pull request for a human to approve.

📚 In this newsletter, I break down how Cognition found its first paying customers, closed the Windsurf deal in a weekend and built the team and the enterprise machine behind the climb to $1 billion. The clips come from the founders’ own interviews.
