Lean Startup Is Dead?

What Patrick Collison’s Startup School Talk Means for How You Should Actually Ship in 2026

Halfway through his conversation with Harj Taggar at Startup School 2026, Patrick Collison told a stadium full of founders that the lean startup doctrine, the one that taught a generation to find a tiny niche and iterate out from it, is running out of room.

A few minutes earlier in the same conversation, he had described spending almost two years building Stripe before it ever launched publicly. Same founder, same hour on stage, two stories that sound like they contradict each other.

They don’t, but the reason they don’t is the actual lesson.

Lean Startup isn’t really dead. But one of the assumptions we’ve attached to it probably needs updating: that learning cheaply means you have to think small.

Below you’ll find the two moments from the interview that matter, what Eric Ries’s original doctrine was actually solving for and two prompts you can run in Claude this week:

  • one to check whether your niche is genuinely divergent or just a smaller, safer version of something crowded

  • one to find the narrowest real door into the ambitious thing you actually want to build
